The Texas Salsa Open
started in 2003 as a small competition to qualify
dancers to compete at the World Salsa Competition in
Puerto Rico. In collaboration with Albert Torres,
the world's most prominent Salsa promoter, this
event has grown over the last years attracting
dancers and groups from all over!
Winners are sent to compete at the Annual World
Latin Dance Cup, an Albert Torres production held in
Las Vegas, NV. Couples and the team finalists will
represent Texas on Salsa styles of On1 and On2 with
a first place prize of a direct pass to the
semi-finals at the World Latin Dance Cup. To be
legitimate, there must be three couples competing in
that particular division. All competitors are

CATEGORIES
COUPLE (Choreography).

GROUP STUDENT (Choreography)

GROUP SEMI PRO (Choreography)

NOTES
· All couples and groups must complete the
registration form to officially enter (at event).
· Registration is not complete until payment and
forms are received.
· By submitting registration form, all registrants
grant HSD Inc. permission to capture and use your
image.
· No refunds.
GENERAL RULES
General Rules:
G1. The following will be the competition
categories.
G2. The event organizers reserve the right to adjust
the competition categories (combine or split up).
G3. All groups must have at least 6 people and no
more than 16. All-boy groups or all-girl groups are
acceptable.
G4. This competition is open to people of all ages,
nationalities, and cultures.
G5. Couples and groups both within and outside of
the state of Texas are eligible to compete.
G6. All couples and groups (with no exception) must
submit the registration form and associated fee.
G7. All couples and groups must demonstrate
consistent timing (either on 1 or on 2) and should
not switch timing mid-choreography.
G8. The decision of the judges and event organizers
is final and undisputable.
Heat Round for Couples:
Q1. The Heat round will be a freestyle dance.
Q2. The DJ will select a unique song for couples,
not to last longer than 2 minutes.
Finals for Couples and Groups:
F1. Costumes & choreography is expected.
F2. Competitors are to provide CD with their music
of choice.
F3. The CD should be labeled with the competitor's
names/group.
F4. Competitor's CD is to have only one and one
track only on it.
F5. The duration of the competitor's music** cannot
exceed 2 min for couples, 3 min for groups. Every
second over the allowed maximum will result in a 1
pt deduction to the average raw score.
F6. It is okay to mix in non-salsa music, so long as
the music (and choreography) is 80% salsa.
** There will be a music and song duration check
before the competition
EVALUATION CRITERIA
Judging criteria will consist of the following:
Timing: 25 points
Musicality: 25 points
Technique: 10 points
Difficulty: 10 points
Partner work/Connection: 10 points
Choreography/Originality: 10 points
Appearance/Artistic: 10 points
Total: 100 points
